Job Description

RACIAL JUSTICE WATCHDOG REPORTER

USA TODAY Network's Triad-area newsroom in North Carolina is growing its enterprise reporting team by hiring another watchdog reporter to be based in Burlington, NC, when moving again becomes feasible. (Until stay-at-home orders are lifted, the position can start remotely).

Our ambitious team in Burlington, Asheboro and Lexington, North Carolina, is connected deeply to local news and the community. We use our resources to cover this heartland Carolina area with insightful reporting, cooperating as a multi-newspaper newsroom.

We are committed to expanding our investigative, explanatory and enterprise reporting about how Black people and other minorities have been burdened by systemic racism in Burlington and in North Carolina. To do this, we need a great journalist to join our efforts.

Daily stories, beat coverage, profiles, reporter visuals and high comfort with digital are all part of the job since we are a small newsroom. This reporter will find and tell compelling stories that hold government and institutions responsible to our readers, especially those who care about the health of Black communities and the treatment of non-white residents.

We are recruiting highly talented people who like working and living in small or medium markets and have the drive to do great work. Coaching is part of our newsroom culture, and we only hire reporters who expect to be challenged to grow, learn and work collaboratively. Above all, we value quality work that makes a connection.

Through the USA TODAY Network, we benefit from industry experts, sophisticated tools and training. We aim to be a successful farm team that's part of a larger organization, but also a place where serious journalists stick.
